Announcement of Nobel Peace Prize, honor of Belarusian human rights activist along with two organizations from Ukraine and Russia

Human rights group Memorial was established within the former Soviet Union in 1987

In the meantime, the Russian human rights group Memorial was based in 1987 by human rights activists within the former Soviet Union to make sure that the victims of the oppression of the Communist regime had been by no means forgotten. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov and human rights advocate Svetlana Gannushkina had been amongst its founders.

The Memorial turned the most important human rights group in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Along with establishing a middle for documentation on the victims of the Stalinist period, the monument compiled and arranged data on political persecution and human rights violations in Russia. Through the Chechnya Wars, the Memorial collected and verified data on abuses and warfare crimes dedicated on civilian populations by Russian and pro-Russian forces. In 2009, Natalia Estemirova, the top of the Memorial department in Chechnya, was killed due to this deed.
