Bum gall as murder; Death toll rises to 13

A series of clashes in West Bengal after Mamata Banerjee came to power. Thirteen people, including CPI (M) activists, have been killed so far. Hundreds were injured. Many are in critical condition. Homes, shops and institutions are being destroyed by fire. While the Trinamool and the BJP were blaming each other, the police became spectators. The Prime Minister sought a report from the Governor on the situation.

A CPI (M) activist and an ISF activist were killed on Tuesday. The Trinamool Congress vandalized and seized several CPI (M) offices. The houses of party leaders and activists were demolished. In many places, locals organized to fight violence. Kakali Kshetrapal, 42, a CPI (M) activist and polling agent, was killed in Jamalpur in East Bardhaman. Kakali, who prevented the attack on the activists’ house, was stabbed to death. Hasanur Zaman, an ISF operative, was killed in Daptapukur in North 24 Parganas district.

Mamata Banerjee will be sworn in as Chief Minister for the third time on Wednesday. The function will be held at 10.45 am at the Raj Bhavan. After the hopes of gaining power were dashed, a fierce battle broke out in the state BJP. Former state president and Tripura governor Thatagat Roy has come out against the nomination of non-party and serial actors.
