Chidambaram slams Guj govt on Bilkis Bano case convicts’ remission

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress chief P. Chidambaram, reacting to a video displaying convicts in Bilkis Bano being “welcomed” in Gujarat, mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s exhortation to individuals to respect ladies is “words” whereas the Gujarat authorities’s determination is “action “.

People will match the “word” with the “action”, he added.

“Hours after the Prime Minister’s exhortation to people to respect women, his hand-picked Gujarat government grants remission of the remaining sentence to persons convicted of gang rape,” Chidambaram mentioned, including “Did the Prime Minister not know about the proposed action of the Gujarat government…”

All 11 life imprisonment convicts within the Bilkis Bano gang-rape case and homicide of seven members of her household on Monday walked out of Godhra sub-jail after the Gujarat authorities allowed their launch beneath its remission coverage.

A particular CBI courtroom in Mumbai had sentenced the 11 accused to life imprisonment on the cost of gang-rape and homicide of seven members of Bilkis Bano’s household on January 21, 2008. The Bombay Excessive Courtroom later upheld their conviction.
