Saturday marks the 100th anniversary of the farmers’ strike. In Delhi, farmers will block the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway around the city. The road blockade is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Farmers in Singhu, Tikri and Gazipur will join the strike. The expressway around Delhi is 135 km long.
Farmers across the country will raise black flags in front of homes and offices. Farmers will wear black bands in protest of the central government’s negative stance on not repealing agricultural laws.
When the strike began, the farmers’ organizations decided to march into Delhi, but the Delhi Police cleared the border with huge barricades. With the popular support for the agitation, the government was ready for talks.
Despite 11 rounds of talks, the law was not repealed. Farmers’ organizations also did not agree that the rules could be frozen for a year and a half. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court froze the rules and appointed a special committee to discuss and submit recommendations. The farmers did not cooperate with the unilateral committee. One of the committee members withdrew himself.
Farmers’ organizations organized other protests across the country, including the Republic Day Kisan Parade. Hundreds of thousands of farmers across the country took to the streets on January 26 with tractors. Under the cover of it, the pro-government media and the Sangh Parivar tried to create controversy by hoisting the Sikh flag at the Red Fort.
The drama collapsed when it was revealed that Deep Sidhu and others who had entered the Red Fort belonged to the BJP.
