Kochi: A dispute has erupted between the National Investigation Agencies over the trial of a case of smuggling gold in diplomatic luggage. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has demanded that the trial in the NIA case be shifted to the Ernakulam Special Court (Prevention of Money Laundering – PMLA). But the NIA opposed it.
The trial of the case needs to be transferred to a court within the jurisdiction of the ED. The ED had also registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in a case registered by the NIA. The ED also said that the PMLA had submitted to the court the documents including the investigation report.
The NIA lawyer strongly opposed the ED’s demand. He said the trial of a case registered under the NIA Act, including treason, could not be transferred to another court and such cases could not be handled by other courts. Arjun Ambalappatta argued. The court asked ED why the trial court needed to be changed. The complaint will be considered next week.
