Kochi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said that it has not received any evidence linking the Chief Minister, ministers or the Chief Minister’s office in the gold smuggling case through the UAE Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram. The accused in the case, Swapna Suresh, did not make any such statement, said a senior NIA official who was investigating the main case of gold smuggling. The revelation comes after an affidavit was filed in the Customs High Court against the Chief Minister and his ministers in connection with the smuggling of dollars.
The national media outlet Indian Express quoted a senior NIA official as saying that Swapna had not spoken to the NIA against the Chief Minister or former IT Secretary M Shivashankar. No evidence was found to substantiate Shiva Shankar. But the official said he did not know if other agencies had made such statements.
The revelation further clarifies that the recent affidavit issued by Customs in the run-up to the November 164 Statement was a politically motivated statement. The main case of gold smuggling was investigated by the NIA. Some related cases are being investigated by the Customs and Enforcement Directorate. The NIA official’s revelation comes amid an attempt to create a smokescreen under the guise of this investigation.
