CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat responds to the Bar Council of India (BCI)’s justification of the Supreme Court’s question on whether a rape victim can marry Brinda said the Bar Council was pretending not to see that the observations from the Supreme Court would have a huge impact on society. The BCI resolution states why unnecessary controversy is being created over the impeccable observations of the judges. The Bar Council also claimed in the resolution that the Chief Justice had asked for what was said in the agreement between the victim and the accused. Brinda asked what is the validity of such an agreement before the law.
The bar council is investigating the victim’s statement that she did not consent to the marriage and attempted suicide. References that defame the nature of the victim are reprehensible in the resolution. The Bar Council has also ‘discovered’ that the letter sent to the Chief Justice asking the court to withdraw the reference was negligent. In a statement, Brinda Karat said, “I have only pointed out the facts and the allegation is baseless.
