Labor camps filthy, overcrowded workers; Kitex test report submitted

East Kambalam> The District Labor Department has submitted a report to the District Collector, State Health Department, Disaster Management Authority and Labor Commissioner on the unhygienic and unhealthy environment in the labor camps of the workers of Kitex Garments.

A raid by the District Enforcement Labor Department on Tuesday found that the labor camps were operating in unhealthy conditions. The tin family room is crowded with groups of 10 people. The rooms are extremely hot even in the rainy season. The inspection was carried out together in all the labor camps. 1065 workers are staying in various camps. The Labor Department found that the camp did not have the facilities to accommodate so many people.

The workers were housed on the model of a cow shed during the Corona period, when they had to live in a social setting. Even the dining area is filthy with dirt on the floor. The raid was carried out on the instructions of the Labor Commissioner following media reports.

Corona issued a notice to the company stating that the situation was overcrowded and unhygienic conditions, including toilets, had to be rectified within a week. The company, which employs 100,46 people, employed 6,000 people at the time of the inspection. The company explained that the others were at home. The Labor Department has decided to conduct another inspection a week later.
