Kochi: The Palarivattom flyover, which was damaged in the UDF scam, will be reopened to the public on Sunday. Traffic on the Palarivattom bridge, which had been suspended for two and a half years, will resume on Sunday at 4 pm. The reconstruction was scheduled to be completed in May, but was completed two months ago and handed over to the people. The flyover, which has been rebuilt with a 100-year guarantee, will be opened to traffic by the Chief Engineer, National Highways Division, Public Works Department at 4 pm.
Minister G Sudhakaran and officials will visit the completed bridge on Sunday.
There will be no opening ceremonies. The tarring of the bridge is complete. The streetlights are also installed. The work, including the weight test, was completed on Wednesday. The Public Works Department received a certificate of suitability for transportation from the DMRC on Thursday.
During the Oommen Chandy government, the contract for the construction of the flyover was awarded at a cost of `39 crore. The contractors were the RDS project. Work began in September 2014. Inaugurated on October 1, 2016. However, the bridge collapsed in July 2017 and became impassable. The Madras IIT has received a study report stating that severe damage is the result of various tests. With this, the bridge was closed on May 1, 2019. The government announced a vigilance inquiry and decided to demolish the bridge.
However, the Engineers’ Association began legal action, demanding a weight test. Construction delayed due to High Court order The government approached the Supreme Court. The LDF government handed over the responsibility of construction to the DMRC after the Supreme Court allowed the demolition of the bridge. The contract was for the Uralungal Labor Contract Society
