As soon as a battle broke out between the demons and the gods. The battle continued for 12 years. The demons defeated Indra, the king of the gods. After dealing with defeat, Indra accompanied the gods to Amaravati, the capital of heaven. King Daityaraj, the conqueror of the demons, took management of the three worlds – Heaven, Earth and Hades. He ordered that gods and human beings ought to cease performing yajnas and worship them as an alternative.
Resulting from this order, together with the destruction of faith, the facility of the gods began lowering. Seeing this, Indra went to his guru Brihaspati for an answer. Brihaspati advised Indra to tie a rakhi on his hand whereas reciting a Vedic hymn on the morning of Shravan Purnima.
