Rape victims are not robots: Brinda

New Delhi: CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat has said that the Supreme Court’s decision to grant protection to the accused in the case of rape of a minor girl will have far-reaching repercussions.

The Supreme Court also asked whether the girl would be married. A 16-year-old girl was raped by a defendant under duress. The offense was repeated 10–12 times. Unable to bear the pressure, the girl tried to commit suicide. Whether or not there is permission in the case of a minor girl is irrelevant before the law. Victims of rape are not robots operating on anyone’s remote control. There is a sixfold attitude in the society that the rapists are ‘bad women’ and the rapists get back their ‘pride’ if they get married. The court’s observation supports it. Action should be taken to withdraw the controversial reference and cancel the bail of the accused.

The Supreme Court’s reference to the arrest of the accused in the case of cheating on a girl by promising marriage has also been controversial. The court asked, “No matter how cruel a husband is, can sexual intercourse between two men and a wife be described as rape?” In a letter to the Chief Justice, Brinda Karat demanded that the court withdraw the reference, which justifies the cruelty faced by women.
