Kochi: The police force has been scouring the sea and land following the warning of the intelligence unit that there is a possibility of human trafficking from the Kerala coast to foreign countries. In addition to the police, the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Enforcement and local police are conducting simultaneous inspections along the coast and on land.
According to intelligence sources, a 45 – member team led by Rodney, a former LTTE cadre from Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka, has reached the coast of Kerala. The state police received the notification on Tuesday night. From Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram, 18 coastal police stations patrolled the seas day and night. Suspicious fishing boats and vessels were inspected.
Coastal police inspected a fishing boat from Tamil Nadu that reached the coast of Kochi on Wednesday night. The owners of the boat were released after producing the original documents. They have been asked to notify Sri Lankans and people of Sri Lankan Tamil descent.
The inspection was intensified on January 11 and 12, 2019, in the wake of 243 people going abroad from Munambam. Ten people were arrested in the case. Although the National Investigation Agency investigated, no further information was available about those who went abroad.
