A special committee will meet at the UPSC headquarters in Delhi on Thursday to decide on a three-member panel to select the state police chief. The meeting will be held at 2.30 pm. VP Joy and state police chief Loknath Behra will be present.
The state has handed over a list of 12 candidates for the post of police chief to UPSC. Of these, three were excluded by the UPSC. Out of the remaining nine, the committee will submit to the government a list of three, including seniority, personal confidentiality report and length of service in Kerala. One of them can be appointed by the government. The committee also includes the UPSC chairman, the Union Home Secretary and the Chief of the Central Police Force.
Currently, Arun Kumar Sinha, Tomin J Thachankari and K Sudesh Kumar are at the top of the list given by the state. Of these, Arun Kumar Sinha, who is on central deputation, is unlikely to return to Kerala. In that case, Thachankari is number one in the list given by Kerala.
The current police chief, Behra, will retire on the 30th. The next cabinet meeting may decide on a new state police chief.
