Three lakh vacancies without appointment in Railways. This is the official figure for the non-gazetted category up to April 1, 2020. The figures tabled in the Rajya Sabha on February 5 show that there are so many vacancies in the security forces. The situation in the Railways is such that vacancies in the State Government Service are reported to the PSC in a timely manner and appointments are made on time.
As on April 1, 2020, 2,78,206 vacancies have not been filled. There are about 40,000 vacancies in the Northern Railway alone. 19,199 on the Southern Railway. In 2016, there were 2,17,369 vacancies and now it is close to three lakh. This is even more so in the case of retirees and gazetted posts after April 2020.
There has been a complete ban on recruitment in the railways since July. Reported posts are being cut. Permanent posts are frozen and contract appointments are made for meager wages. That, too, stopped at Kovid’s hideout.
Vacancies in the security forces such as station masters and guards are not even being filled. According to the Railways, action will be taken to fill more than one lakh vacancies. No further action will be taken as the recruitment ban remains in place.
The application will be invited and the appointment process will take at least two years to complete. By then, the vacancies will be old again.
