Train Ticket Reservation: Move to make debit card mandatory

Move to make train ticket-reservation-debit / credit / card mandatory as part of the promotion of cashless transactions. The process has started in various railway divisions. Prior to this, special counters have been set up at railway stations including Kozhikode and Shornur Junction under Palakkad Division giving priority to debit card holders.

There are three reservation counters at Kozhikode station. In one of these, debit card holders are preferred. This counter is often empty. At the same time other counters are well crowded‌.

The move is to put pressure on employees and implement this. Divisional officials have suggested that more passengers be brought in for cashless transactions. If not, employees should provide an explanation. It is also advisable to use a debit card strictly for large-scale reservations.

Passengers prefer to pay for a short trip ticket. This is because it is difficult to get a refund when a ticket is canceled. Canceled passengers are often not reimbursed. There is also the situation of having to complain to the ombudsman for a small amount.

The introduction of debit cards in the railways is part of the central government’s policy to promote digital transactions. The revenue received in each division is being reviewed. Statistics show that digital transactions are very low in many places. In Palakkad division, only 2% of the income from debit card usage.
