UP’s health system derailed in Corona, more than one lakh patients waiting for surgery in Lucknow alone

A senior faculty member of Lucknow-based King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has revealed that KGMU alone has a backlog of around 45,000 surgeries. Patients with gall bladder problems, intestinal problems, tumors, corrective surgeries and even orthopedic surgeries are in line. The surgery was put on hold due to the pandemic. Most of these are elective surgeries that are planned in advance and do not require any emergency.

However, doctors agree that some surgeries, if postponed beyond a point, can prove fatal for the patient. According to official estimates, three major government hospitals in Lucknow- King George’s Medical University, Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences and SPM Civil Hospital – performed an average of 300 surgeries till a day before the second wave.
